1st North-South Forum
Creating pro-poor markets for ecosystem services
Ecosystems provide important services to people at the local, regional and global level. Among others, they provide food, water, timber and fibre, they regulate the water cycle and the climate, they support soil formation and nutrient cycling and they provide non-material cultural, aesthetic and re-creative benefits. Recently, the payment for ecosystem services (PES) has become an important issue in international negotiations. In the 1st North-South Forum, we will discuss to what extent and under which conditions payment schemes for ecosystems services contribute to both sustainable management of ecosystems and poverty alleviation.
