20 November 2010 – Linda Roberts (Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics ETH Zurich / Eawag and member of the North-South Centre) was awarded the Otto Jaag Water Protection Prize for her thesis “Arsenic dynamics in groundwater-irrigated and seasonally flooded paddy fields in Bangladesh”. »»
12 November 2010 – Devesh Rustagi, together with Stefanie Engel and Michael Kosfeld, published a paper in Science 330, 961 (2010), doi:10.1126/science.1193649. In addition, Björn Vollan and Elinor Ostrom wrote a perspective on the paper. Perspectives are solicited contributions by Science editors to reflect
opinions on ‘exciting research’.
The work of Devesh Rustagi was continuously funded by the North-South Centre.

Dabei geht es immer auch um die Ressource Wasser. Wolfgang Kinzelbach ist Professor für Hydromechanik an der ETH Zürich und engagiert sich für Wasserprojekte in China und Afrika. In der «Sternstunde Philosophie» plädiert Wolfgang Kinzelbach für mehr Nachhaltigkeit im Umgang mit Wasser und zeigt, dass die Ressourcen der Erde gerecht auf alle Menschen verteilt werden müssten. »»

In der anschliessenden Podiumsdiskussion suchten Experten zwischen offenen Märkten, Schutzzöllen, nachhaltiger Produktion und Klimawandel nach Lösungen für zukünftige landwirtschaftliche Herausforderungen. »»
7 October 2009 – Prof. Silvia Dorn (ETH Zurich) and her team working on a post-harvest project with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia have won the SFIAR (Swiss Forum for International Agriculture) Award 2009. The project, which has been supported by the North-South Centre (ZIL), aimed at preventing post-harvest losses in dry beans by a combination of a parasitoid and host plant resistance. The research team has found an effective solution to reduce the big losses farmers incurred while storing their harvested dry beans. CIAT’s international network will be instrumental for the implementation of the findings to the benefit of small-scale farmers in the tropic belt. »»
